I currently have a ASUS PG5D1-FM motherboard with Intel Pentium 4 3.20Ghz processor.
I need to upgrade the CPU to get more speed and capacity in games and usual functions.
But i dont to what do i really NEED to upgrade and how?
Intel dual core? quad core? core 2duo? i dont understand all these! which one is the best..well obviously quadcore..but which one can i use on my motherboard? i need one within 100
its a case of either i upgrade or buy a new pc but they cost over 500, i would rather change the cpu.
any advice wud be great!

Dont get another faster P4, get a new MOBO, you'll barely get a speed boost with a slightly faster P4 but with a new Motherboard that is compatible with Core2duos, and a core2duo your computer will be much faster
Also the cheapest and one of the best bang for your buck upgrade is adding more RAM.

It won't fit, your better off finding a faster P4 CPU from www.intel.com and search the one with the highest GHz. Gaming pc's usually need graphic cards, try that too. From ATICPU UPGRADE? intel p4 to what?is your motherboard -FM or -VM. i can't find -FM on asus website nor the model PG5D1 so i scrambled it a bit and came up with P5GD1-VM.

according to the website, its an lga 775 socket with FSB 800. therefore you can only upgrade to a Pentium Dual Core or the low end Core 2 duo which has FSB 800. the core 2 duo is a better built technology but you need to make sure that you'll get FSB 800 only as above these, it wot work. check here for models:

double check your mainboard model #, that one is not on asus site. But P5GD1 is.
