Overclockng 790i ultra on q9450 cpu?

Motherboard: EVGA 790i ultra

CPU: Q9450

RAM: 2 x 2gb Corsair DDR3

this is the first time i have tried overclocking with a computer, and from watching a utube video of a guy showing how to overclock this same motherboard on the same cpu(same ram too). so i tried to give it a shot.

now all he basicaly did was change the

fbs - memory clock mode to 'linked'

fbs - memory ratio to 'sync mode'

fbs (qdr), MHz from [1333] to [1800]

this gave him about 3.6 GHz

he showed all the other features as well but i'm not sure about playing with them unless i have to.

so anyway i went into the bios and did that and then saved and exited.

apart from making a rather sad sound my computer wouldn't load.

when i restarted it, it said 'warning' it was in safe mode and that i should check the memory or cpu fsb.

so i just changed it back to defualt an now it work just fine.

so what did i do wrong and what do i need to do to get it right??

3.6 GHz is about as fast as i could ever need so i'm aming for that.Overclockng 790i ultra on q9450 cpu?Lol... ah welll.. youtube, they joys...

Well for starters visit custompc.co.uk and look on the overclocking section of the forums for an actual guide.

Secondly, all CPU;s are different, yours may not overclock as much as someone else's and likewise. Yours may not be able to reach 3.6GHz at all. (Infact beaing in mind the CPU is a 2.66 and you want 3.6. Thats a 1GHz increase that is around 30%. So you probably wont manage it.

Overclocking is something of an art to say the least.. however you shouldnt just jump up your speed by 0.94GHz instantly.. espcially witha C2Q. You should raise it up in 5-10MHz increments. So 2.66 to 2.71. Then check it runs, and go for more if you're happy.

Also what he probably didnt mention is that you would, most likely, need to increase the voltage to get stable at that. Also the CPU will run hot. (so you better have a VERY GOOD 3rd party CPU, if its stock then give in now...)

Post this on the forums at custom pc. Ill help more there (and so will others :p)Overclockng 790i ultra on q9450 cpu?The reason overclocking is even possible is because the companies that make the chips set the clock speed to the lowest common denominator for all of them, so they don't have to check them all. You might have just been unlucky and not have much room for overclocking on you CPU or FSB. You can try some smaller increments first, and get some degree of overclocking.
