I habitually set the priority to high whenever I play a CPU/Memory intensive game to high or above normal in the XP task manager.

This will reset as soon as the program is closed or the computer restarts. If you have Hyper Threading (dual Processors) you can also set the affinity (set for 1 or both processors).
